John M. O’Connell
John O’Connell is a management consultant specializing in areas of Organization Development and Effectiveness: Process Facilitation, Leadership and Team Development, Personal and Team Coaching, and Conflict Resolution.
He has worked with a wide range of people and organizations of all sizes, across industries and in the US, Canada and Europe—from individual coaching to large-scale meeting facilitation, with diverse organizations such as AT&T and The Nature Conservancy. He has also worked across many levels and boundaries within organizations, from union members at BART to the top management team at Chrysler Corporation. His projects have ranged from a Strategic Vision offsite with a six-person start-up to large-scale, “Organizational Integration” meetings with 400+ managers and the World Trade Center “New Design Session” with 5,000+ people attending.
In addition to his independent work, John has served on the management team as Senior Vice President of Organization Development for UCSF Stanford Health Care, and as Co-Director and President of The New Games Foundation. He has served as a Faculty Partner with the Center for Executive Development in Cambridge, Massachusetts and as Associate Partner in Paragon Consulting Group, Vail, Colorado. He has also been part of the adjunct faculty of the Boston University Leadership Institute and has taught courses through a number of universities.
John is particularly well known for his work in “active learning,” using learning/simulation games, sea kayaking, Ropes Courses and exercises drawn from the martial art of Aikido as methods for grounding learning experientially. He integrates a wide range of methodologies, such as Graphic Facilitation, Dialogue, Personal Coaching, and Team Performance training, to engage individuals, groups or entire organizations in the organizational learning process.
John is a graduate of the University of Michigan and was one of the initial students invited to attend the graduate program in “Planned Change” with Ron Lippitt and Jim McConnell in 1973. He has also studied R. Buckminster Fuller’s ‘Whole Systems’ approach and had a brief tutorial with him. Over the past twenty years he has woven his career between line management and “Human Relations” management consulting: organization development, facilitation, coaching, mediation and training. The essence of his work has been facilitating "Positive Interaction" within client organizations, enabling them to become more effective and efficient.
In addition to his academic and professional experience, John brings to his practice more than 25 years of martial arts training, coaching and teaching. He is a third degree black belt in Aikido, a discipline which holds a great deal of relevance to the areas of personal development and mastery, teamwork, social interaction and systems analysis.
John lives with his wife Susan Haldeman, a mediator, and their son TMO in San Francisco. He enjoys windsurfing, basketball as a team game, strategy games and outdoor adventures.
